After hearing of remarks that a black man named Wright Woods allegedly made to a white girl in his neighborhood, four white men on horseback abducted Woods from a coal kiln where he and his father were working. Woods was missing for nearly a week before a neighbor, attracted by a large group of vultures, found Woods’s body with a note attached to his foot that read: “If the law will not protect virtue, the rope will.” No immediate reports gave the names of any of the perpetrators or any attempts at arrest or prosecution.
