According to newspaper accounts, a white man named G. R. Hodges allegedly caught an unidentified 18-year-old black man raping his daughter. Hodges then proceeded to tell people what had happened, at which point a mob formed, abducted the unidentified black man and lynched him. His body was found in the Black River, near Dunn, NC. A newspaper in Dunn lated denied all allegations that the lynching occurred.
