According to a newspaper account, ten unidentified African American men were shot at when they allegedly attempted to arson “the house of a gentleman” near Core Creek in February 1866. The home owner shot at the men, who were reported to have been armed. Reports are unclear about whether the home owner killed the “three or four” men he shot, and other reports on these murders could be found.
